Modern Goth?
"Real Goth" as defined by "Rivet" at www.everything2.com
"Real Goth (as opposed to this obnoxious Mansonite crap we see everywhere) is less about wearing all black and acting spooky. It's about appreciating a dark aesthetic as a contrast to the relentless happiness forced upon us. Let's face it, not everything is going to be happy. Recognize the inherent sorrow in the world as well as the joy."

Part of the modern debate revolves around the authenticity of those who describe themselves as "Goth." According to Rivet, to be a fan of Marilyn Manson does not an authentic Goth make! Who might qualify as a true Goth according to Rivet's definition above? Can you provide an example of lyrics and/or comments your chosen "Goth" has made to support your choice?

P.S. From left to right: Ozzy Osbourne (self-proclaimed Prince of Darkness); Bob Dylan (songwriter and recognized poet of the Beat Generation); Kurt Cobain (Gen-X prophet); Jared Leto (new rock band and lots of black eyeliner lately!)

Jared Leto:

"I used to like to break into other people's houses and sit in their rooms. I found it very comforting to be in someone's empty house."

Lyrics to "The Story" (A Beautiful Lie):

I've been thinking of everything
I used to want to be
I've been thinking of everything
Of me, of you and me

This is the story of my life
These are the lies I have created

I'm in the middle of nothing
And it's where I want to be
I'm at the bottom of everything
And I finally start to leave

This is the story of my life
These are the lies I have created
I created

And I swear to god
I've found myself
In the end

In the end

This is the story of my life
These are the lies I have created

You could make a good argument with these lyrics! Especially if you consider them within the context of the definition of "true" gothicism on my initial blog...
