Hi all: For those of you who did not receive the handout for your Critical Notebook entry regarding Samuel Coleridge's Review of The Monk, here are the questions. Feel free to email me if you have any questions. Have a great weekend!
From Samuel Taylor Coleridge’s “Review of The Monk by Matthew Lewis”
1. Although Coleridge dishes out a great deal of criticism of Lewis’ novel, he does identify the “excellencies of the novel." What are they?
2. What does Coleridge identify as the “defects” of the novel?
3. Coleridge identifies “two principal mistakes in judgment, which [Lewis] has fallen into.” What are they? (Be careful with this one—the way Coleridge introduces these “mistakes in judgment” is confusing, in terms of format.)
4. According to Coleridge, how might a person, upon reading Lewis’ gothic tale, “turn the grace of God into wantonness”?
5. What is Coleridge’s central point, in a nutshell? Do you agree? Disagree? Explain your answer.
